Wastewater treatment in the dairy industry has become more complex in the last few years, from both a regulatory and treatment process standpoint. Whether dairy wastewater will be reused or discharged, dairy processors must produce effluent that meets strict nutrient concentration guidelines. Recently, EPA has announced regulation around nutrient management and discharge. Parkson systems can effectively remove phosphorus, nitrogen and BOD to the level required. Parkson combines the best biological and filtration technologies into an enhanced nutrient removal system that will meet or exceed any mandated effluent quality.

Phosphorus Removal

  • Physical/Chemical Treatment to 0.03 mg/L P
For low limits, the DynaSand® Filter, either alone or in combination with the Lamella® Gravity Settler, has been used for phosphorus removal since 1989. It is a proven, simple and cost-effective sand filter available in several configurations that is operator friendly and only needs minimal attention. In most cases, the DynaSand Filter will reduce chemical dosage by 20-30% compared to conventional treatment.

For extremely low limits, Parkson's DynaSand D2® Advanced Filtration System technology is selected. This innovative two-stage filtration process uses two DynaSand Filters in series and a clarifier to treat the reject.

Nitrogen Removal

  • Biological systems to 10 mg/L N total
  • Filtration systems to 5 mg/L N
The Biolac® Wastewater Treatment System nitrifies by using fine-bubble aeration in an earthen basin or lagoon. This activated sludge process uses long sludge age biological treatment to create an extremely stable, easily operated system. Nitrogen removal to specific limits is achievable with various system configurations. Biological phosphorous removal can also be accomplished by incorporating an anaerobic zone or Bio-P zone.

The highly efficient HiOx® Aeration System uses ultra-fine bubbles and high floor coverage to obtain maximum oxygen transfer. Depending on the chosen configuration, various nitrogen effluent concentrations are achievable in addition to phosphorus reduction.

BOD Removal

  • Biological treatment to 20 mg/L BOD
  • Membrane ultrafiltration systems to 5 mg/L BOD
Various technologies used to reduce phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations excel at BOD removal. Depending on the levels required at your facility, and the space available, Parkson will work with you to determine the most suitable process to meet your needs.
