Aquous™
Biological Fixed Film Technology
Aquous™ is a biological fixed film process that uses unique moving biofilm carriers or media, to provide a compact and stable biological treatment process for municipal or industrial wastewater. The carriers provide a large, protected surface area to encourage the growth of a diverse and active biofilm. The design of the carriers ensures maximum surface area for biomass growth in a given tank volume. As a result, adding biofilm carriers to an existing process provides a very simple and cost-effective way to increase the treatment capability of a system without building new tanks. Simple sieves retain the carriers in the tank and work with either low-maintenance medium-bubble diffusers (aeration tanks) or slow-speed mixers (anoxic tanks) to completely mix the moving carriers.
The Aquous™ technology can be configured in a flow through CMFF® System (complete mix fixed film) using the MBBR process with no secondary clarifier sludge recycle. Or it can be used as a CFAS® System (combined fixed film activated sludge) using the IFAS process with a return activated sludge stream from the secondary clarifier, resulting in a combination of suspended and fixed biological growth in the bioreactor. In either configuration, multiple biological process stages can be used to efficiently remove BOD, ammonia, total nitrogen and total phosphorus, to satisfy effluent limits. Fixed film processes are proven to be very robust and self-regulating, allowing them to handle changes in load with minimal process upset. This process stability contributes to a system that is very simple to operate, reduces operator time and attention, and produces excellent quality effluent.
